Dr. Christopher B. Arena
Dr. Christopher B. Arena is an associate professor of biomedical engineering and mechanics at Virginia Tech and the co-founder and chief scientific officer of Adlore Inc. He is a leading expert in bioelectricity and its applications for medicine, especially for cancer treatment and wound healing. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech, where he invented a novel technology for destroying tumors without damaging healthy tissues, called high-frequency irreversible electroporation (H-FIRE).
He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he explored new ways of using ultrasound for diagnosis and therapy, such as using tiny bubbles that can change their phase in response to sound waves. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers, filed 10 patents, and received several awards and honors for his research and teaching. He is an active member of several professional societies, such as the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, and the Acoustical Society of America. He is passionate about conservation, hunting, and fishing, and enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and his pointer dogs.
